Wedding Celebrant & Vow Renewals: Oxfordshire & Cotswolds

A Bespoke Ceremony, from £715

" Nigel was fantastic as our wedding celebrant. He created a ceremony that was so personal, heartfelt, and perfectly matched what we wanted." ~Gus

Who I work with

If you're considering a non-religious celebrant for your wedding or for the renewal of your vows, it's because you value someone who will take the time to tailor the ceremony for you. You're probably not the sort of people who follow the crowd or are happy to go with something vanilla. Maybe you like traditions, as long as you put your own twist on them. And for you, it doesn't need a religious element. In which case, we're already on the same wavelength!

When it comes to the wedding ceremony itself, you are likely to want someone who can switch between light-hearted and solemn, as the moment dictates. Because then you will get the ceremony that lifts your hearts and reflects who you are as a couple.

How a celebrant-led wedding works

Creating wedding ceremonies that will leave you and your guests with incredible memories takes a lot of preparation. And a lot of thought. You will need guiding through this process so that you leave no stone unturned. It will be a wonderful journey - as much part of the fun as the day itself.

How the Celebrant process works

My ceremonies often include symbolic elements, such as hand-fasting, as well as readings, music and looking for ways to actively involve loved-ones.

Can a humanist celebrant legally marry us?

It's important to note that whilst engaging a humanist celebrant gives you huge scope to tailor your ceremony, we're not able to legally marry you (yet, but that is changing). That's fine, as that can be addressed separately.

Difference between a Celebrant and a Registrar

It's crucial for US/international couples looking to get married in the Cotswolds, that they understand how this affects them.

Which area do you cover?

I am based in the Cotswolds, in Oxfordshire. To read more about my story, click here. I mostly work in the Cotswolds, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire. But I am available to officiate ceremonies anywhere (even abroad) subject to travel expenses.

Recent Weddings

Here's a flavour of some recent weddings...

In 2025, I've had the pleasure of doing a number of beautiful and varied weddings throughout the Cotswolds. These include Jess and Gus (see picture, right) with a lovely, relaxed ceremony at Woodstock Town Hall. I married Conor and Amber in the garden of one of the Oxford colleges. And one really memorable event, was when Californians, Elliott and Zoe, engaged me to officiate a truly intimate wedding in the garden of a beautiful Cotswold country farmhouse.

Nigel Ridpath, humanist wedding celebrant.

"I could not recommend Nigel more highly. He took the time to get to know both of us and wrote a very personal ceremony. On the day Nigel delivered a great ceremony that involved our whole families with readings and hand-fasting. We are so glad we chose Nigel to be our celebrant."

Frequently Asked Questions

Please contact me if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A celebrant is a person trained and accredited by a celebrant-training organisation to preside over a range of ceremonies and celebrations, such as: weddings, vow renewals, baby naming, funerals and memorials.

A registrar is a local government employee who performs ceremonies in venues licensed for marriages, using specified contractual wording to legalise a marriage. Registrar weddings are necessary in England (along with religious leaders, they are the only people who can legally marry you (although that might be changing soon)). My couples tend to do a 'quick in and out' at a registry office for the legal bit and then use me to officiate their ceremony in the manner and place of their choice.

Only with a celebrant will you have the ability to create a completely tailored ceremony and conduct it anywhere, at any time.

I've explored this topic more in this Guide to Registrars and Celebrants.

To call yourself a humanist celebrant (which I do), you have to be trained by Humanists UK. As part of that training, potential celebrants' beliefs are explored quite extensively. Most non-religious people are humanists - even if they don't use or acknowledge the term. You can take this quick quiz to see if you are a humanist. Humanist ceremonies include no religious content.

Independent celebrants are less fussy about religious content.

I tend to find that couples want me to write the ceremony, but you can absolutely write it if you want and get me to conduct the celebration. Most couples I work with want to write their own vows, but I can help you out with that too. I've written a Guide for Vow-Writing.

Of course. After we spend time understanding exactly what it is your after, I create the entire script.

Absolutely!

I am currently taking bookings for 2026, and into 2027. If you have a date in mind - even if it's fairly short notice. Get in touch about your wedding to check availability.
